A Tribute To What We See When We Dream

My current landscape painting, entitled, Dreamscape, presents our natural world in an abstract dreamlike fashion. It is my world, a world orchestrated with its own unique rhythm. This extraordinary canvas presents the world as I see it, as my eye focuses on shapes and shadow, the building blocks for creating my art.

I first executed Dreamscape in black and white on paper some years ago and this image immediately became a favorite of mine. I carefully framed my artist’s proof of my Collagraph print under glass. Today, I still display this print in a prominent location in my painting studio for friends and family to enjoy.

I have often experienced the desire to execute my black and white image in color and I often contemplated tinting the original prints with watercolor. This spring, I came to realize that this image inspired me to create it as an oil painting on stretched canvas. So it began, a favorite black and white image became the seed for a new original oil painting. At 14×14 inches, this canvas is almost exactly the size of my original print image.

I excitedly prepared my canvas with three coats of acrylic gesso and I sanded the canvas with fine tooth sandpaper between coats. The third, final coat of gesso was tinted with the hue raw umber to provide a soft medium tone. I first painted the image in a range of tonal greys using burnt umber, ultramarine blue and titanium white. This helped me lay down my image, its shapes and shadows, staying true to its values to my satisfaction.

The next step was choosing a palette and I am truly enjoying creating all the colors that I have long held in my mind’s eye. This painting is truly an exciting endeavor! I envisioned it long ago and I will enjoy the debut of this extraordinary canvas in my online gallery! As I paint, I imagine you will enjoy Dreamscape too!
