Karen LaFontaine American Painter In Oil

My artwork is born of my emotional response to the world around me. I endeavor to capture precious moments in time, as my senses perceived them, and to share those all too fleeting impressions with the viewer. My eye is attracted to color, shape, shadow, and I pay particular attention to the intricate play of these elements in creating bold design in the scenes I paint. I often explore new pigments in each work of art, and many of my colors are custom blends or they come from layers of glazing and are unique. I commit nature inspired scenes to canvas and I am happy to share my paintings. If my art will be remembered by the viewer, if my art inspires imagination, lifts a person’s spirit for a moment in their day, then my time at my easel is well spent and my heart content.

Karen Kalnins LaFontaine earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the world-class School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in 1990, where her main interests were printmaking and works on paper. After pursuing a nonprofit fundraising career that culminated in international leadership work abroad, LaFontaine rededicated herself to her art. Currently painting in oil, Karen LaFontaine celebrates the beauty of our natural world by capturing fleeting moments in time to share with the viewer. Painting in a representational style with a naturally intuitive approach, LaFontaine infuses each work of fine art, landscapes, flowers and animals with emotion and originality to spark the imagination.

Karen LaFontaine is no stranger to exhibiting her art. She began exhibiting in professional juried art exhibitions at the age of seventeen, when she first exhibited a self-portrait rendered in graphite on paper. Acknowledging that only one person can own her original oil painting, Karen LaFontaine has made fine art prints of a selection of her oil paintings available through her Art Gallery Giclée Collection.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, raised in Connecticut and educated in Boston, Massachusetts, LaFontaine now resides in Lawrenceville, Georgia with her husband, Peter and dog, Snoopy. When the artist takes a break from her easel, she is photographing flowers in her garden, planting more flowers, vacationing with her family at the shore or relaxing by reading a good book.
