Morning Breaks

A Day Begins

The first light from sunrise breaks through a cloudy sky at the seashore. The day is new, quiet, gentle. My soul fills with peace. If only the day could remain so blissfully serene and undisturbed, like this moment… now captured for all time.

At the break of dawn, as the day brightens, so does my energy. I am that morning person. I savor the quiet minutes, before the hustle and bustle of a fully scheduled day.

This is my chance to begin anew. I set my teakettle on the stove. I check today’s weather. My furry and faithful companion wakes at the sound of my activities. He yawns, stretches, and then waits patiently as I ready for our ritual morning walk. I find socks, shoes, leash, harness; we are feeling adventurous as we head out into our day.

In the morning air, we both breathe deeply. These precious moments inspire me. They are my fuel for creative visioning of what the day will bring.

I can always see it in my mind’s eye.

I will set up my canvas on my easel. I will prepare my palette for Morning Breaks, a new painting. My palette will include ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow medium, mixed with a small hint of Prussian blue. There will be dark, blue tones in the clouds, with hints of violet prepared with the addition of alizarin crimson permanent and cadmium yellow light.

Dark blue, violet. Hints of gold, peach and white, round out the color scheme. The image will be a vast, sweeping scene, seashore to horizon. Yet, it will be a small canvas, precious to hold in one’s hands.

We walk along carefully, watching out for cars as we cross streets. We wave to neighbors, as they too, begin their day. Our day is growing brighter, warmer, as we turn toward home.

A new day and a new canvas await. I am inspired and it is time to paint.

Thank you for taking my morning stroll with me and enjoying my Artist’s Journal, On The Easel. I love sharing the inspiration for my new canvas entitled, Morning Breaks, currently On The Easel with you! (Article image, detail from the beginning of Morning Breaks, 12 inches by 16 inches, oil on canvas).

Be well, Karen LaFontaine
