Mr. Sweet Dreams

My Beagle Snoopy

Most days, when I paint, my little beagle boy is intent on keeping me company. He excels at this by napping nearby. Some days we actually compete for the same patch of sunlight. I want to paint in the natural light to see the true colors of my palette. My sweet dog wants to sunbathe in any patch of sunlight hitting the floor – even if his sunbathing centers him right near my easel!

One evening, after a day of painting, I snapped a photograph of my dog sleeping soundly, his paw tucked under his chin! I was excited to capture this special moment in time! I love the way my sweet, furry companion is resting his head on his paw, while he dreams of chasing rabbits through our backyard.

If you knew the extent to which my dog is paw shy – meaning do not touch the paws! – then you understand the smile this now completed oil painting brings to my heart! …He sleeps, paw tucked under his chin for safe keeping! This sweet moment truly sums up my faithful companion. It helps me remember the numerous times, over many years, I endeavored to clip his nails to keep him groomed and respectable.

In the end, our understanding is that I leave all nail clipping to the professionals, so as to keep our special bond in good order.

During this month of December, this newly completed painting brings special joy to our family’s home. During peace filled moments, I watch my dog nap as Christmas carols play on our stereo. His new Sweet Dreams portrait is a “twin” to his sweet presence as he naps in his favorite dog bed nearby. He is faithfully intent on keeping me in good company, as we head into the final days of 2020, painting and napping in unison, in the warmth of the sunlight together.

Thank you for visiting with me in my Artist’s Journal, On The Easel. I love sharing the story of my latest, sweet and furry painting, now completed with you! (Article image, detail from Sweet Dreams, 11×14 inches, oil on linen panel, December 2020.)

Be well, Karen LaFontaine
