Ode To O’Keeffe

Channeling a Master

My latest oil painting is inspired by the beauty of my flower garden and all its many colorful blooms. My focus for painting through these summer months continues to thrive in my heart and mind. I remain centered around my colorfully, vibrant theme that has taken on a life of its own, the many Miracles of my Summer Garden.

My latest artwork, now complete, entitled Ode To O’Keeffe is a flower portrait through which I have channeled specific and careful attention to color, shape and shadow. In every brush stroke, there is a flower petal, a rose from my garden. More so, there is an emotion I have felt when I have enjoyed viewing wonderful flower paintings in museums created by the late painting master, Georgia O’Keeffe.

How does one paint an emotion…I grow my understanding of O’Keeffe’s approach to flower painting with every brush stroke. My emotion informs me… my brush works shapes that are warmly pigmented, yet sometimes cool, sumptuous with curves, yet strong and bold. I break boldness with softness, warmth with cool, present a flower petal with its abstract counterpart, a shape, color, shadow…I channel this master of painting for hours each day…I stand at my easel and discover the complexity of nature.

I am peaceful and feel great gratitude, thank you Georgia O’Keeffe for instructing those who dare notice you and follow, and yet will never replace your brilliance. Might I dare to trace your footsteps just a little longer… I remain entranced. I do not wish to break the spell of warm summer days, and flower paintings, the wonderful emotions they embody.

I invite you to paint along with me, channel a master.

Dare to paint an emotion, an abstract thought embodied in a perfect form. It can be a flower, a mountain, a hillside, a curve, a color, a mark. Perhaps you too will inhabit my world as you paint a flower from your garden, or you will paint your own inspired homage to that which you love.

Thank you for visiting with me in my Artist’s Journal, On The Easel. I love sharing how you too can keep the brilliance of warm summer days alive in your heart! Article image detail from Ode To O’Keeffe, 16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas.
