Rose Painting

Artist’s Journal Quote by Karen LaFontaine October 2022

Today is a magically wonderful day in my art studio. I am laser focused on my subject, immersed in the rhythm of painting a single red rose, a portrait. I am studying a flower petal, its top and bottom, its front and back. I explore its deepest shadows and I paint light. I stroke a luscious, gentle curve with a soft brush and brighten the softness of a petal’s edge. I take a moment to exhale.

In the background, Vivaldi is playing on my stereo, fueling my inspiration for my endeavors. I press onward, clear minded and conscious of my surroundings.

I feel vibrantly alive, creating in the moment…

Paint the flower petal, top and bottom, front and back, shadow, light, stroke the curve, brighten edge. I stay with the rhythm of the image, layered flower petals, unfolding, revealing mystery. All life unfolds, in nature, at my easel, in my flower garden, all around me.

It is paramount to capture the beauty of a fleeting moment in time.

I experience Vivaldi’s Four Seasons lifting my spirits higher as I work. The music carries me along during my study of the wondrous beauty only found in nature. I can hear the rhythm of these sumptuous flower petals as clearly as I feel music pulsating through my body. I know instinctively I am painting what must be heard; I bring rhythm to canvas for the viewer to enjoy. This beautiful flower is along for the ride!

With each brushstroke, I contemplate the rose portraits I have painted. They are all unique artworks, each infused with their own life. For this rose portrait I have chosen a limited yet vibrant, full of life palette including: Alizarin Permanent, Quinacridone Red, Quinacridone Magenta, Transparent Orange, Cadmium Orange, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and Titanium Zinc White. These hues are mixing spectacular combinations of bright fiery reds complimented by deep violet shadows. I am so happy to be at my easel!

If you love roses the way I do, then you will find today’s rose portrait will be a spectacular addition to my growing Collection of Rose Paintings that are cherished by fellow flower lovers and art lovers alike. They include exhibited painting: Tea Rose Delight, oil on canvas, 16 inches by 20 inches. And, rose portrait: Ode To O’Keeffe, oil on canvas, 16 inches by 20 inches. I am happy to share with you that Ode To O’Keeffe will enjoy her first public exhibition opening this year on November 12, 2022 and will remain on exhibit through January 14, 2023! See her in person in the Georgia Gallery at The Hudgens Center for Arts and Learning located on Sugarloaf Highway in Duluth, Georgia.
