Tea Rose Delight

Detail first brush strokes of new rose portrait titled Tea Rose Delight by Karen LaFontaine

A New Rose Portrait

My June garden is teeming with lush vibrant flowers and perfumed scents. I go exploring with my camera in hand. I am on the lookout for flower portraits and most especially roses. I have received numerous requests from art lovers and friends for more rose paintings and I am happy to oblige! Forever Yours Red Rose, which is currently available for purchase in my online art gallery, was always meant to be the first in a series of rose portraits. It is time to begin painting another!

I venture forth at different hours of the day, observing the light and shadows of early morning and late afternoon. I focus my attention on the variety of rose bushes soaking up the sunshine. I snap pictures of Walking on Sunshine, my yellow rose bush and Joseph’s Coat climbing rose too. I photograph red and pink Knock Out roses. I angle for stunning views, enjoying the patterns in their shapes, shadows and color. I bring my photographs to my painting studio and contemplate nature’s treasure.

I see numerous winning photographs from which to create new rose portraits! I hold my photos against a new canvas set upon my easel. I am excited! I have made my selection for a new painting entitled Tea Rose Delight. Like my red rose painting before it, this rose portrait will fill the canvas to the edges. Its palette will be a stark contrast to deep reds and offer the viewer softly colored petals in shades of pink, yellow and cream.

I set my photographs aside and begin preparing my canvas. My mind is racing over the never ending possibilities! I never had any doubt – there are plenty more rose portraits to paint and I must get started on my Summer 2020 selection!

Thank you for visiting with me in my Artist’s Journal, On The Easel. I enjoyed sharing today’s canvas, currently On The Easel with you! (Article image is “detail from underpainting” of, Tea Rose Delight, canvas 16×20 inches).

Be well, Karen LaFontaine
