Tree Study, Oil on Paper

An Adventure In Painting

Some days, I get especially playful and just feel the need to experiment!

Recently, I decided a series of small, oil painting studies on paper will provide the perfect avenue to explore new subjects and painting styles. It is also providing an opportunity to paint images on a smaller scale then the paintings I create on canvas!

This inventive project entails painting my way through several 9″ x 12″ pads of Arches Oil Painting Paper. Today, I painted my Tree Study. My approach to this study involved utilizing a limited palette. Just a small number of my favorite landscape colors where used during this hour long study. My color selection included: Ultramarine Blue, Sap Green, Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Transparent Red Earth, and my favorite white, Titanium Zinc White, a must have for painting sky!

It was wonderful. I love the way the paper softly pulled the paint off my soft synthetic brush! The oil paint has retained a rich, vibrant, shiny glow, and it is just perfect. This painting has a unique softness in its finished appearance. It strikes me that the texture of the paper helps achieve a wonderful look and feel, quite like that of a watercolor painting.

I am growing excited as I shuffle through my portfolio of pictures, sketches and ideas for works on paper! I know I will enjoy this new, creative adventure! And, I hope you do too!

Thank you for visiting with me here in my Artist’s Journal, On The Easel. I love sharing today’s inspiring and fun painting idea with you! (Article image is detail from Tree Study, Oil on Arches Paper, 9″ x 12″).

Be well, Karen LaFontaine
